What is the difference between coaching and counseling?

Coaching does not treat mental health disorders and is usually oriented on the present. Coaching requires individuals to be able to accept direct input and feedback to solve a specific issue. Coaching clients must be motivated to follow through with the feedback through taking action. By scheduling a coaching session, you agree that this is coaching and is not mental health therapy.

Counseling is appropriate for diagnosing and treating mental disorders. It is generally longer term in nature, and frequently deals with past trauma. Counseling is intended to help people recover from emotional or other psychological disorders such as depression or anxiety. With counseling, an individual is often able to have insurance cover some of the cost for therapy. Counselors can also do coaching, but coaches do not offer counseling or mental health therapy.
