How to Stop Overthinking and Feel More in Control
Do you ever feel like your mind just won’t turn off?
You replay conversations.
You analyze every decision.
You think through every possible outcome…
And somehow, instead of feeling more in control, you feel more overwhelmed.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
Overthinking is one of the most common patterns I see—especially in high-achieving women.
What Overthinking Really Is
Overthinking isn’t just “thinking too much.”
It’s your brain trying to:
Predict outcomes
Avoid mistakes
Stay in control
Keep you safe
It often shows up as:
Replaying the past (“Why did I say that?”)
Worrying about the future (“What if this goes wrong?”)
Second-guessing decisions
Needing more certainty before taking action
It feels productive…
But it usually leads to the opposite.
Why Overthinking Makes You Feel Less in Control
Overthinking creates:
Mental overload
Decision fatigue
Increased anxiety
Delayed action
The more you think, the less clear things feel.
And the more unclear things feel, the more you try to think your way out of it.
It becomes a loop.
The Real Cause of Overthinking
Most people assume overthinking is a mindset issue.
But it’s actually driven by two deeper things:
1. Your Nervous System Is Activated
When your body feels stressed or unsafe:
Your brain looks for problems
Your thoughts speed up
You try to stay ahead of everything
Overthinking is often a stress response, not a personality trait.
2. Underlying Beliefs About Control and Safety
Overthinking is often fueled by beliefs like:
“I need to get this right”
“I can’t afford to make a mistake”
“If I think it through enough, I’ll feel better”
These beliefs create pressure to keep thinking—even when it’s not helping.
Why “Just Stop Thinking” Doesn’t Work
You may have tried:
Telling yourself to stop
Distracting yourself
Trying to think more positively
But if your system is activated, your brain won’t just shut off.
Because it believes it’s helping you.
How to Stop Overthinking (What Actually Works)
To break the cycle, you need to shift both your body and your thoughts.
1. Calm Your Nervous System First
Before trying to change your thoughts, regulate your body.
Try this:
Take two sharp inhales through your nose
Slowly exhale through your mouth
Repeat 3–5 times.
This signals safety and helps slow the mental loop.
2. Interrupt the Thought Pattern
Instead of following the thought, pause and ask:
Is this helping me right now?
Am I solving something—or looping?
This creates awareness and breaks the automatic cycle.
3. Shift from Thinking to Sensing
Overthinking lives in your head.
To shift out of it, bring your attention to your body:
Feel your feet on the ground
Notice your breath
Engage with your environment
This pulls you back into the present moment.
4. Replace the Need for Certainty
You don’t need to figure everything out.
Try shifting from:
“I need to know”
To:
“I can handle whatever happens”
This reduces the pressure driving the overthinking.
5. Take One Small Action
Overthinking thrives on inaction.
Clarity often comes after movement.
Ask:
What is the next simple step I can take?
Then take it.
Even small action creates momentum.
What It Feels Like When Overthinking Shifts
When you’re no longer stuck in overthinking:
Your mind feels quieter
Decisions feel simpler
You trust yourself more
You take action without needing perfect clarity
You feel more in control—not because you’ve figured everything out…
But because you’re no longer stuck in the loop.
A More Direct Way to Break the Pattern
In my work, I help clients move out of overthinking by addressing both the nervous system and the beliefs driving it.
Using a process called Peak State Alignment, you can:
Shift out of mental loops quickly
Identify and release limiting beliefs
Step into a calm, grounded state
Often in less than 10 minutes.
A Simple Way to Start
The next time you catch yourself overthinking:
Pause and take 3 rounds of the Alignment Breath.
Then ask:
Am I trying to control something I can’t control right now?
That question alone can create space.
